  • How it works

    Microorganisms love carbon ... in small bits! The naturally occurring microorganisms that live in landfills love carbon ... and landfills have a lot of it. There is a lot of carbon in plastic but they are in super long chains called polymers. Microorganisms find these long chain polymers hard to eat, until now!

    Let’s get technical

    In a microbe-rich environment, BDP™ attracts microbes and these microbes start colonizing on the surface of the plastic. The enzymes secreted by the microbes render the plastic hydrophilic (water-loving). As a result, a film (bio- film) which is rich in microbes and moisture forms on and adheres to the surface of the plastic. Microbes then hydrolyze the plastic using secreted enzymes and water. As the individual polymer chains are broken down into single monomers, the microbes consume the polymer matrix. During this process, the microbes send out a signal, attracting more microbes to feed on the plastic mass. At the end, most of the CO2 and other materials formed during the earlier stages are consumed, leaving behind mostly methane which is captured for clean energy.

    ** We have tested PE bags via ASTM D5511 which has shown enhanced biodegradation of 12.60% after 60 days. No further testing was carried out. We have tested PET yarn via ASTM D5511 which has shown enhanced biodegradation of 8.52% after 45 days and 84.1% after 423 days. We have tested polyester yarn via ASTM D6691 which has shown enhanced biodegradation in a sea water innoculum of 55.1% after 423 days (as opposed to 2.1% after 409 days with non treated standard polyester yarn).
